I don’t know about you, but if I saw a tsunami coming, my first reaction would be to get out as far away as I could as fast as I could. The last thing I would do would be voluntarily put myself under it or worse again on top of it.

But Garrett McNamara has just entered the Guinness Book of records for riding a 78ft wave.

Narly! eh? It just looks insane to me, but then I’m not a surfer. But McNamara’s a pro; he’s been surfing since he was 11 and has been a professional since he was 17, he’s now 44.

So what you see gliding across the top of that wall of water is 27 years of experienced professional doing what comes naturally to him, not because he was born to do it, but because he has made himself a master of his craft.

He wasn’t planning to surf that day but when he went out “Everything came together. Everything felt right.” So what may appear daunting to you or me, was all in a day’s work for him. But I think we’ll have to concede that even by his standards, this was a particularly good one.

Many things we face in life can appear overwhelming, but to a professional with the right skills and experience what might seem an impossible task to you may just be another day at the office.
